Britta Steffen: From the swimming pool to the stage
How former competitive swimmer, coach and entrepreneur Britta Steffen combines mental strength and sustainability
There are sporting careers that impress – and there are careers that shape an entire era of a sport. Britta Steffen clearly belongs to the second category. She collected titles, records and medals in her favourite events, the 50 and 100 metre freestyle, and after her comeback in 2006, she was one of the fastest swimmers in the world for years.
Britta Steffen: A career that sprints forward – and then consciously starts afresh
Her journey began early: first in a club, then at the sports school in Potsdam – consistent, performance-oriented, with a focus on the international stage. And that stage delivered: world records, European Championship successes, World Championship medals – and the sporting highlight with Olympic gold in 2008 in Beijing in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle.
But things get exciting where many stories end: after the greatest victories. Because today, Britta Steffen stands not only for ‘higher, faster, further,’ but also for the courage to question her own course – and to think beyond the principle of performance.
Mental strength: success is not a permanent state
Anyone who knows top-level sport from the inside knows that medals shine – but so does pressure. Britta Steffen speaks openly about what helps in phases of pressure to perform and how performance can be maintained in a healthy way in the long term. One sentence sums up her change of perspective:
‘I never expected that I would achieve more with less.’
It is precisely this tension that makes her content so tangible: it is not about slogans of perseverance, but about self-leadership, dealing with doubt, defeat and the ability to develop potential in a sustainable way.
Or, as her lecture suggests: ‘Mindset and attitude are crucial – it’s okay to fail, to be afraid, to doubt and to start over.’
Sustainability: an attitude that begins in everyday life
In addition to mental strength, sustainability is a central theme. After taking a conscious break, Britta Steffen continued her academic education (including industrial engineering with a focus on the environment/sustainability) and now combines her experience in top-level sport with social responsibility.
The protection of the oceans is particularly close to her heart. In an interview, she explains this very concretely: it’s about healthy oceans and coasts – and counteracting ocean acidification.
She also sets an example personally, for example by avoiding air travel and leading a reflective lifestyle. This is in line with her own very human approach: she describes how conscious decisions give her ‘emotional returns’ – and make her truly happy.
What you take away from her: performance that lasts
Britta Steffen shows that ‘performance’ is not only measurable in seconds. It is also measurable in the ability to
- Remaining clear-headed in stressful situations,
- Accepting setbacks as part of development,
- Strengthening teams and organisations through attitude,
- Living responsibility not as a moral cudgel, but as a conviction.
In her lectures, she describes precisely this bridge: the insights gained from sport – especially in the mental realm – can be applied to all areas of life.
