Monika Schnitzer
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Schnitzer is Professor of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Her research focuses on innovation, competition policy and multinational enterprises.
She has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University.
Monika Schnitzer has been a member of the German Council of Economic Experts (Sachverständigenrat zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung), better known as Wirtschaftsweisen, since April 2020 and its chair since October 2021. This makes her the first Chair of the German Council of Economic Experts in the body’s almost sixty-year existence. Manager Magazin selected her as one of the hundred most influential women in German business in 2022.

Monika Schnitzer has been active in policy advice for more than 20 years, including as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection and for eight years as Deputy Chair of the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation.
She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition. Monika Schnitzer has participated in several expert commissions set up by the German government, including the Commission on Competition Law 4.0, the Expert Committee on the Automotive Industry Future Fund and the Expert Group on the Transformation of the Automotive Industry. She represents the Council of Experts in the Concerted Action of the Federal Government.
Monika Schnitzer was elected a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 2008, a member of Academia Europaea in 2016 and a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina – National Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 2021. She has been a Fellow of the European Economic Association since 2008. From 2015-2016 she was Chair of the Verein für Socialpolitik, the association of German-speaking economists.
Monika Schnitzer was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2005, the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2012 and the European Medal of Bavaria in 2021 for special services to Bavaria in a United Europe. In 2021, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel.
