Management and leadership in disruptive times
The increasing dynamics of the working world demand new forms of cooperation. Leadership by numbers or in rigid structures does not go far enough! Because: we are moving in increasingly disruptive systems.
In the future, it will be necessary to readjust the understanding of the roles and tasks of leaders and managers in order to be able to adequately meet the challenges of the time – we must prepare ourselves for change and enable modern leadership.
Focused leadership versus shared and inspirational leadership
Contrary to old and hardly flexible (=adaptable) leadership structures, a modern leadership culture requires, among other things, shared and inspiring leadership.
The implementation and establishment of shared and inspiring leadership enables, for example, 360° leadership – a possible future of leadership. Other factors and target dimensions for modern leadership are:
- Responsibilities are distributed among the collective.
- Network-like cooperation comes to the fore.
- Shared leadership in open teams.
- Inspiring action is initiated by leaders.
- Promote fluid forms of cooperation and project-based structures.
Leadership should also provide orientation for employees
One of the central tasks and functions of modern leadership is to give orientation to the employees or the team. Leaders should have and communicate a clear idea of where the led group stands and what path is being taken together.
In order to ultimately move forward and overcome challenges in a creative and innovative way, leaders are needed who can switch from reactive survival mode to an initiative shaping role. This requires values, principles and attitudes that guide action. These must be recognised, continuously reflected upon and adapted to the new circumstances.
Values, principles and attitudes are mental beacons that significantly influence leadership behaviour and set goals and directions.
Leaders are challenged to expand their repertoire of skills
In disruptive times, personalities are needed who can face diversity and uncertainty with new methods and networked structures – and who can deal with distributed authorities in well-moderated collectives.
What is required is a strong inner attitude, an open mindset, a clear vision, dynamic ways of acting, digital competences and all of this structured and transformed into innovative methods.
The path for modern leadership
The future will show that leaders who dedicate themselves to these topics and also reflect on them will steer much more stably through dynamic and disruptive times. And in doing so, they will also create more orientation and security among their employees.
