“Germany, as NATO’s largest European partner, is called upon to play a leading role within the Alliance. However, we are not in a position to do so. I would be relieved if we could simply keep up with the others. The reasons for our weakness are manifold – political, social and historical. As a society and as a country, we must reflect on our inalienable values and draw lines – both internally and externally – that are non-negotiable. And we must stand up for what we believe in. The future of this country is at stake.”
