Thilo Stadelmann
Thilo Stadelmann is a distinguished professor of artificial intelligence and machine learning at the ZHAW School of Engineering in Winterthur, Switzerland. There, he serves as head of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and steers the research group “Computer Vision, Perception & Cognition”. Additionally, he is one of the co-founders of Alpine AI, a promising start-up developing and implementing Swiss GPT for enterprises.
His academic journey first led Thilo Stadelmann to study computer science in Giessen and Marburg. In 2010, he earned his PhD in Natural Sciences from Philipps University in Marburg with a dissertation on multimedia analysis and voice biometrics. After his PhD, he spent several years in the automotive industry, where he worked in various technical and management positions on the development of software systems for vehicles and driver assistance systems.
Thilo Stadelmann’s research focuses on opening up new application areas for machine learning, in particular Deep Learning. In doing so, his investigations span a wide range of industries, including healthcare, media, culture, and the manufacturing industry. Due to his outstanding results, he has received numerous awards and publication prizes for his research. In addition, he was honored with his university’s teaching award for his teaching in the field of artificial intelligence.

The AI Advantage: Strategies for Unleashing Business Value in Real-World Use Cases
Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s lips, at least since ChatGPT. The technology has proven to be a useful tool on a broad basis, but at the same time it also repeatedly allows itself astonishing weaknesses. How does this fit together and what added value can we realistically expect in a professional environment? What is possible, what is a dream of the future? The presentation classifies AI trends by explaining the underlying technical operating principles. On this basis, he will present comprehensive real-life examples of generative and predictive AI systems that can be used to assess the potential of the technology for your own use cases – for example, how organizations can use ChatGPT & Co. to securely access their internal knowledge and know-how. This enables the audience to create added value in their own environment by using AI to their advantage.
Artificial Intelligence: A Tale of Two Meanings
Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing our lives. Corresponding products and services provide benefits and create added value. At the same time, the media is talking about existential risks or a life in the matrix. Does artificial intelligence enable both – concrete benefits now, with catastrophic side effects? The lecture traces the two essential but unrelated meanings of the term “artificial intelligence”: On the one hand, as a scientific discipline that produces amazing solutions with great potential and manageable risks (for this we take a look at the state and future of technology and applications).
On the other hand, AI serves as a catchphrase for certain schools of thought to make the narratives of extreme worldviews appear plausible – from Transhumanism to Effective Altruism and others (we look at the beliefs currently spreading in the tech industry, which are referred to as the “TESCREAL” package). The real opportunities and challenges of technology for our society can thus be separated from ideological statements that are philosophically highly controversial. On this basis, the lecture sketches a hopeful picture of the future.
Decoding Tomorrow: AI’s Role in Crafting Strategic Plans and Scenarios
Our times are characterized by constant change. More and more often, realistic scenarios are needed as the basis for strategic planning, in the creation of which the implementation and evaluation of representative surveys becomes a bottleneck. The presentation shows how artificial intelligence can act as an efficient and creative source of inspiration and enable companies to assert themselves in dynamic environments. Using concrete examples, he will take a look at the possibilities offered by large language models and prompting for the generation of populations of virtual personas that can be automatically surveyed and evaluated. As a result, this offers scenarios and decision-making bases at the touch of a button, taking into account a large diversity of attitudes. The combination with other AI and data analysis approaches offers a comprehensive set of tools for strategic planning of the future.
Generative AI and ChatGPT
How did the current breakthrough come about and what can be learned from the behind-the-scenes economic thriller? How does the technology behind it work and what added value can it bring? How will the development continue and what should be done now?
Artificial intelligence: What exactly is behind the term?
What shall we do with the current hype about the possibilities and the fears up to the extinction of civilisation? What are examples of very practical uses of artificial intelligence and how should we position ourselves for the future, as individuals, as a company and as society? Are there reasons why we should be hopeful and fearless about the future, even though notable people are concerned?
Introduction to data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence
What is behind the core technologies of digital transformation and how do they work? How can you profit from them in professional use as a company, authority or organisation? What are the best practices for getting started, and what pitfalls should be avoided? Without any prior technical knowledge, the lecture will provide enough basic understanding to be able to assess the potential and limits of the technologies for oneself.
The future of Artificial intelligence
The world is in an uproar about the potential of AI, but most scenarios assume technology that is not even foreseeable today. The lecture uses many examples to highlight the weaknesses of today’s (Deep Learning) methods and shows viable paths for the coming years from the engagement with neuroscientific findings.
Data-centric innovation
How can digital innovation succeed, what turns data into gold? The lecture shows the basics, brings surprising insights and demonstrates with many real cases.
