Lecture & discussion on the presidential election
Following the presidential election, Germany’s economy, politics and society are faced with many unanswered questions – which require quick answers and intensive joint reflection:
What are the Trump administration’s economic policy guidelines and what challenges will we face? How exactly will economic and security policy be linked in future, and what does strategically intelligent action mean in this context? In order to be effectively positioned here in the long term, we need to look at the big picture and analyse what will make America ‘tick’ from 2025 onwards: What vision is Trump pursuing, who is coming into which office, what issues are moving US society, and where is its path leading?
How can we think about economic and security policy more closely together in future – because this will be a common thread in the Trump administration.
USA:
- Current political developments / Presidential elections
- The economy
- Society and culture (values debates such as identity politics, trigger warnings, generational conflicts, protest movements, education and access to education, etc.)
Transatlantic relations / the West:
- Trade relations
- Security and foreign policy
- USA and Germany
- USA and EU
- Image of Germany in the USA
- The West and the Rest: China, Russia
Democracy and challenges for democracy today:
- What does “liberal” mean today, what does “conservative” mean, what does “left” mean?
- Populism, polarisation
- Trust in politics, media, experts
- How do we negotiate the big questions of the nation? What is “democratic dispute” and constructive debate?
- What should democracy look like in the 21st century?
