Ralf Schumacher – What companies and businesses can learn from Formula 1

Formula 1 legend Ralf Schumacher left his mark on international motor racing for over a decade.
At the ORGATEC Work Culture Festival in Cologne, presenter Thorsten Giersch spoke to Ralf about the parallels between motor racing and business. They discussed his experiences from his active motor racing career, his role models and his eye for quality and perfection as an entrepreneur today.
What he has taken away from motor racing includes speed, teamwork, team spirit and working towards shared goals. Even though he says he is a different sort of boss today than he was at 30, the pace at which decisions are made still matters to him. It’s no different in business than it is in sport.
“Motivation within a team achieves much more than pressure,” Ralf Schumacher is convinced.
When asked about managing emotions within a company, he has a clear stance. He prefers it when someone takes the lead, even if they ruffle a few feathers at times, but still has the ability to take a step back and reflect on their own actions.
Ralf Schumacher is a former Formula 1 racing driver and now works as a Formula 1 expert for Sky. Between 1997 and 2007, he competed in 180 Grand Prix races, securing six victories and 27 podium finishes, and left his mark on Formula 1 as one of the most successful German drivers of his generation. He is one of Germany’s best-known sporting personalities.
